Cross County was established 15 Nov 1862 but no term of the circuit court was ever under held while the county was under Confederate rule. At the May term of the county court in 1868, an election was requested for the purpose of electing three commissioners to decide a suitable location to remove the seat of justice from Cleburne. The election was held on June 6, 1868. J. M. Levesque, Louin Chappell[e], and J. M. Ladron were elected commissioners. The commissioners' report to the August 1868 court was that the seat be moved to Wittsburg. |
