| 7 | USS Edgar F. Luckenbach Coker, along with many other returning servicemen, sailed home from Europe after the end of World War I on the Luckenbach. The steamship, Edgar F. Luckenbach, a 7923 gross ton, steel-hull, single-screw cargo freighter, was built in 1916 at Newport News, Virginia, for the Luckenbach Steamship Company of New York. During the first year of World War I, she was chartered by the U.S. Army, operating with a civilian crew until July 1918, when she was taken over by the U.S. Navy at New Orleans, Louisiana, and placed in commission as USS Edgar F. Luckenbach (her registry ID #, 4597, was probably assigned some years later). As a unit of the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, the ship made two round-trip voyages to France during the remaining months of World War I. Reassigned to the Cruiser and Transport Force in mid-December 1918, the Edgar F. Luckenbach was converted to a troop transport and operated from March to October 1919. During that time, she completed five trips from France to the United States, bringing American service personnel home from the former war zone. Decommissioned at the end of October 1919 and returned to her owner, Edgar F. Luckenbach, she resumed her commercial career. The ship returned to government service as a time charter on March 3, 1942. On 1 July 1942, Edward Luckenbach accidentally entered a U.S. mine field off Smith Shoal, Florida, and struck two mines. One of her 42-man merchant complement perished in the mishap. Her crew and 12-man Navy armed guard abandoned the vessel, which sank with her superstructure above water, but they reboarded the ship the following day. They were rescued and taken to Key West, Florida. This ended the Navy's use of the ship. |
