Biography |
Little is known of the early years of this Hezekiah. As a loyal British subject, he was a member of the Virginia militia and saw duty for a short period of the French and Indian War of 1754 - 1763. The surviving records of the Virginia militia showed that Private Hezekiah Hopgood received pay on four different occasions -- Jan 1756, June 1756, 7 Jul 1756, and Jul 1756. He signed these pay vouchers with his mark. In the first three of these accounts Hobgood was in Captain Thomas Waggener's company; in the other, Captain Joshua Lewis's Company. At this time Captain Waggener and Captain Lewis were under the command of George Washington of the Virginia militia. When Hezekiah's name appeared on the 1758 Granville tax list, it was listed following and on the same line with James Meadows. This would suggest that Hezekiah worked for Meadows. It was about this time that James Meadows married the daughter of John Shearman - one of the early settlers of the county. It is not known with certainty who Hezekiah married but it was likely Richard Fowler's daughter, Elizabeth. Both families shared bonds for decades in Granville Co. and later Hezekiah named one of his sons Fowler. Hezekiah Hobgood was enumerated in the NC state census of 1786 in Nap of Reed's district of Granville County. He is listed as being over 60 years of age which would make him born before 1726. He had two sons, Hezekiah and Fowler, who were still in his household. His wife was Elizabeth who had been born before 1750. The other 7 white females were probably his daughters. Also listed in the 1786 census were John and Thomas who were Hezekiah's other two sons. |
