Biography |
Hezekiah Hobgood was born, lived, and died in Granville County probably near the town of Oxford. His age is best established by a tax list of 1799 as Hezekiah Hobgood, Jr. He would have to have been 21 years of age to be a property owner, thus he was born at least before 1778. He was found in the Tar River Dist of Granville County along with Thomas, John, Fowler, and Hezekiah, Sr. As the youngest son, he was cared for by his mother and sisters. While his brothers learned to read and write, Hezekiah never did. When he applied for a marriage bond on January 26, 1817, Lemuel Hobgood, his nephew, was the bondsman and Rhodes N. Herndon, a well-known citizen of Granville County of this period, was the witness of the bond. [From 1850 census records, Rhodes Herndon was a 22-year-old merchant living in Oxford, NC.] His future wife was Elizabeth Walker, the daughter of John Walker and granddaughter of Solomon Walker, who at the time the bond was issued was a ward of the court. Her guardians had been John C. Russell and John Washington as well as others. Court records state she was under 21 years, and according to census records, she was likely about 17. [Hezekiah was over 40 years of age.] They were married in Granville County, NC on Jan 26, 1817. Hezekiah was not carried on tax rolls after 1819 as he was likely exempt being over 45 years-of-age. In the 1820 census, he was the only Hezekiah Hobgood listed as the head of the household. His wife, Elizabeth Walker Hobgood, apparently died in late 1833. We assume this since their daughter, Mary B. Hobgood, was briefly indentured out. She only remained there until Hezekiah remarried the following February. |
