Triple Funeral Today. Retta Coker, Grace Coker and Joseph C. Coker, Influenza Victims, Were Buried in One Grave.
Last evening's issue of the Nowata Star tells of three deaths in the Coker family in that town and of the burial of four bodies there this afternoon. The Star says: Mrs. Retta Melinda Coker, aged 25 years, the wife of the late Joseph C. Coker, and Mrs. Grace G. Coker, age 19 years, the wife of Samuel Coker, died of pneumonia following Spanish influenza at 5:05 and 5:25 o'clock Sunday morning at the Coker home on East Cherokee street. The bodies were taken to the St. Clair undertaking parlors where they were prepared for burial and placed in the undertaking parlors by the side of Joseph C. Coker, who died Thursday and Bernard Wilson Coker, who died late Saturday afternoon. All four were victims of the epidemic of Spanish influenza which is sweeping the city. Mrs. Retta Melinda Coker, formerly Miss Retta Melinda Carter of Green[e] County, Missouri, was married to Joseph C. Coker in July, 1912. Of the union three children were born, Melba Louise, age 5 years: J. C. Jr., age 4 years; and Bernard Wilson Coker, age 15 months, the latter having passed away. Mrs. Grace G. Coker was 19 years of age and was born in South Dakota. Her maiden name was Miss Grace G. Trude and she became the wife of Samuel Coker on May 9, 1917. Both of the ladies had a multitude of friends in this city and in different parts of the county who were shocked by the news of their untimely death. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Coker, Bernard Wilson Coker and Mrs. Samuel Coker will be buried Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Coker cemetery. Rev. Wm. Barr will conduct the funeral services which will be held at the cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Coker, and their son will be buried in one grave and Mrs. Samuel Coker in an adjoining grave. |
