LATE JOSHUA TURNER - VETERAN OF TWO WARS Old Soldier, Who Lived in Leavenworth County for Fifty-Five Years, Member of Kansas Legislature

Leavenworth Times, December 18, 1909, page 3.

Joshua Turner, who died at his home at Easton Sunday afternoon, a brief mention of which was made in Tuesday morning's Times, was one of the oldest settlers and one of the best known citizens of that section. Mr. Turner had lived in this locality fifty-five years on the 1st of January, having settled at Easton on New Year's day 1855. When he went there Easton was nothing more than a trading post on the old Fort Riley Road, the town not having been laid out until the following March. Armistead Dawson, the old trader, was still there and had just been appointed postmaster.  Joshua Turner was a native of Missouri having been born in Ray County on November 11, 1828. When a young man he married Miss Cynthia Drake, in Clay County, Mo., and a few years later came to Kansas. Mr. Turner's father was one of the pioneers of that section of Missouri. Joshua Turner was a veteran of both the Mexican and Civil Wars. During the former he served in the quartermaster's department as a teamster under Captain Hugh Sweeney. He served in this capacity until the close of the war. He participated in the Rebellion during Price's raid, as a member of Company D, Nineteenth regiment, Kansas Militia, having enlisted at Easton in the fall of 1864, and was discharged in Leavenworth. Mr. Turner was a member of the Kansas Legislature during the sessions of 1865, 1866, 1872 and '73. He had also served as clerk of Easton Township, a member of the school board and had held other local offices. He was an old member of the Masonic lodge.  By his first marriage Mr. Turner had seven children. In the fall of 1872 he was married the second time to Miss Martha Adamson, a daughter of the pioneer, E. K. Adamson. By this union he had five children.
