  	The daughter of John Mendenhall and Margaret Gonce, Margaret was born around 1813 in East Tennessee and married James Atkisson around 1828, probably in McMinn County, where they appeared on the federal census in 1830. They later moved to Illinois, around 1839, and Iowa around 1849. Margaret is said to have died in 1858 in Trenton, and at least one of her descendants recalled seeing her headstone in "the Brooks Family Cemetery near Trenton, Missouri." If so, then the headstone appears to be long gone or illegible. A 1963 transcription of the surviving headstones in that cemetery, at the time, lists an "Elizabeth Atkinson" who died November 3, 1858 "in the 29th year of her age." If the stone and the transcription were accurate, this could not have been Margaret, who would have been about 45 in 1858.
