The Brown and Crowl families are among the oldest in Kansas, coming to the area when Kansas was a territory and not yet a state. Beau's parents are buried near him. His maternal grandparents are buried in Lawrence. Beau served in the army in World War I at Camp Funston in Fort Riley, Kansas, CO 4, 164 Depot Brigade, and was a corporal at discharge. Following the war, he worked briefly as a machinist assistant for the railroad. Beau and his wife Gretta raised three sons: Richard, Lawrence Jr, and Robert. Together they worked at the business founded by his parents, Brown's Decorating Shop in El Dorado, Kansas, and maintained it throughout their lifetimes.
