    • Gus Hunt Crumpler, aged 78, of 413 North Center Street, Harrison, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, at North Arkansas Medical Center. He was born March 7, 1911, at Lowry, a son of Thomas Newton and Phoebe Sue (Dunlap) Crumpler. He was a lifelong resident of Boone County. He operated a country store, post office, a farm and a cedar post business at Lowry before serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1946. He was a retired advertising manager for the Harrison Daily Times. He was a charter member and vice president of the Northwest Arkansas Archeological Society, a charter member of the Boone County Historical Society, editor of the Boone County Historian and was a charter member of the Writers Club. Crumpler served on the Boone County Democratic Central Committee for 10 years, six years as secretary. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Post 44 of the Amerian Legion. An author, Crumpler wrote Under the Burmese Pagoda, a novel about the conflict between man and nature set in Burma during World War II. He was stationed in Burma during the war and was fascinated by the country, its people and its wildlife. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Jimmy F. Villines, Berryville and Jeannie and Gus Smith, Harrison, and three grandsons, Tom and Larry Villines, both of Berryville and Matthew Smith, Harrison. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Afton (Chappelle) Crumpler, two brothers and three sisters. Funeral was at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at Christeson Funeral Home with Roger Logan and Bill Essex officiating. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery under the direction of Christeson Funeral Home. Pallbearers include Lincoln Brown, Jim Joe Mallard, Hugh Ashley, Roger Logan, Elmer Jones and Sam John Smith. Honorary pallbearers include Bill Cowdry, Dr. Sam Scroggins, Merle Shouse and Ted Clothier. Memorials may be made to the Boone County Historical Society and the American Cancer Society.
