- Alva Melvin Herd, 83, went home to be with his Lord, Friday, September 19, 2008. He was born December 10, 1924, in Locust, Ozark County, MO to Delmer and Geneva (Shaw) Herd. Alva graduated from Gainesville High School in 1942. He served in Germany with the 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron in World War II. He was a charter member of the First General Baptist Church in Springfield, where he worshiped until his death. Alva was a supervisor at Harry Cooper Supply Company retiring in 1990, after 42 years of service. Alva enjoyed sports, participating in basketball, softball, golf and bowling. He also enjoyed gardening, but most of all, spending time with family. Alva is survived by his wife, Earlene of 61 1/2 years; one daughter and husband, Sharon and Leon Nutt; one son and wife, Greg and Carla Herd; two grandsons, Jerry Nutt and Jordan Herd; one step-granddaughter, Cindy Smith; one step-great-grandson, Travis Boles; two great-granddaughters, Amber Nutt and Myleigh Herd; one brother and wife, Ray and Trinia Herd. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Michael Nutt; two brothers, Marlin and Paul. Burial will be at White Chapel.
