    • Alaska pioneer Roscoe Shelby Richards, 89, died April 12, 1997, of natural causes at the Mary Conrad Center in Anchorage. A memorial was held at Kehl's Funeral Home in Palmer. Mr. Richards was born Sept. 23, 1907 in Fairfield, Okla. He was the son of Samuel A. Richards and Christina Agee. He grew up in Springfield, Mo., and after completing high school there he moved to Juneau, where he worked in the Alaska Juneau Mine. In 1929 he returned to Springfield where he met his wife, Vanola. They were married July 27, 1929, and in August 1929 they moved to Juneau. In 1935 they moved to Anchorage where they raised their family. His family said, ''Mr. Richards was a true pioneer Alaskan in every way. He was very active in the mineral development in Alaska and was also very supportive of aviation in Alaska. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.'' Mr. Richards was preceded in death by his wife, Vanola, and is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Samuel and Mildred Richards of Southeast Alaska and Fred and Delores Richards of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law Carolyn and Dave Crusey of Wasilla; five granddaughters, Vinnie Vinette of Wasilla, Sandy DeMers of Seattle, Diane Hutchison of Fairbanks, Suzanne Graves of Fairbanks, Crissola Talsania of Washington, D.C.; and sister, Edna James of Forsyth, Mo. Arrangements were handled by Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory. [Source: Anchorage Daily News April 22, 1997]
