The Turnbo General Store played a big role in the lives of many people in and around Three Brothers, AR. which is about 11 miles north of Mountain Home on Hwy 5. Formerly The Wallace (or Wallis) General Store, it was purchased sometime in the 1920s by Sid Turnbo and his wife Zella Copelin Turnbo, when they and their children, Newt and Naomi, moved from Pontiac, Missouri to Three Brothers. The Turnbo's ran it for over 50 years. At times it was the only store closer than Mountain Home, Arkansas, Gainesville, Missouri, or Oakland, Arkansas. The pictures and much of the information for this story were provided by Jim Turnbo and his wife Deborah Shelton Turnbo. Jim is the son of Newt Turnbo and his wife Maye Byrd Turnbo. It has often been said of country stores, “If you can’t buy it there, you don’t need it.” Some of the items sold are shown in the picture above. These and others include hardware, men’s overalls, jeans, coats, shirts, shoes, yard goods, notions, caps, gloves, etc. for the ladies and children. All kinds of groceries, livestock feed, and supplies. Howard Reeves remembers that you had to cross the road (Hwy 5) to load your feed. The Turnbo's also bought eggs, chickens, and cream. These were hauled to Springfield, Missouri, or sometimes to Cotter and shipped by train. They even sold their own brand of coffee beans labeled, “THE TURNBO’S MOUNTAIN GROWN COFFEE,” sold exclusively by Sid Turnbo, General Merchandise, Three Bros. Ark. The Three Brothers Post Office was located inside the store and Mrs. Zella Turnbo was the Postmistress until 1953 when the Post Office closed. Then the residents received their mail on Route 1, Mountain Home. The Post Office boxes and other memorabilia were donated to the Baxter County Historical & Genealogical Society. When the Old Salt Trail was improved to make way for Highway 5 to Missouri, the Turnbo's rose to the occasion. They moved their living quarters upstairs and made a temporary boarding house for the highway construction workers, furnishing beds and meals for 8 to 10 men. They even sold lunch to other workers besides the boarders. Sid hired someone to help in the store, and Mrs. Turnbo hired two ladies to help her. Over the years the Turnbo Store has been robbed several times. Once the bandits cut a hole in the wall and took the safe outside, opened it, stole its contents, and left the safe behind the store where it remains to this day. (2012) Sid Turnbo died in 1963, and Mrs. Turnbo in 1978. Their daughter-in-law, Maye Turnbo had kept the store open, but closed it shortly after. The Baxter County Archives has phone books from 1948 through 1979, in the Mountain Home phone book, the store was on a party line (phone # 15F4) and shared the phone with four subscribers when the operator said “number please.” In 1962 it changed to 425-3275 when we changed to dial phones. In 1971 the Midway exchange went in and their number changed again to 481-5160. The old store is still standing but time and weather have taken a toll.

Preparing for Big Hay Crops. --Arthur Scott and Homer Wallace, two of Cedar Creek township's progressive farmers and stockmen were transacting business in Yellville one day last week. When questioned in regard to the prospective cotton crop in their section this year, they said the acreage would be comparatively small--that the farmers in their section realizing the large profits to be derived from corn, hay, hogs, and cattle had turned their attention largely to that industry, and that many acres of land are being seeded this spring to alfalfa and other hay crops.

Mr. Wallace owns a large tract of land that constitutes one of the best farms and stock ranches in North Arkansas, and he has it well stocked, which is a monument to his own efforts and industry, and proves conclusively that any young man who will use the proper efforts in the Ozarks can become independent within a few years in the stock business.

    Was Merely Saving Time
    Was Merely Saving Time
Mr. Homer Wallace who owns the Hampton farm on White river in _______ township, spent a few hours in Yellville, Thursday of last week. He came by his old home near the Three Brothers, where he spent Wednesday night, and drove to Cotter in time to catch the north bound train, leaving his car at Cotter. Mr. Wallace said that soon after he bought his car, and before he became thoroughly acquainted with it, he took his wife and children for a drive through his pasture, and got along first rate until he returned to the barnyard gate and when he went to stop he made a mistake and put his foot on the gas, and his Lizzie jumped through the gate, and that as soon as he got it stopped, Mrs. Wallace and children got out. He said he tried to explain to Mrs. Wallace that it was only to save time that he opened the gate with his car, but that she persisted in having her own way about the matter. But aside from this Mr. Wallace is one of the best farmers and stock men in the country. He has 85 head of cattle, and feeding a car load of young heifers which he will put on the market about the middle of December. He says he has been dealing in stock for the past twenty years and at times he has lost money on cattle, but has never lost a dollar on hogs. He says this is a great country for hogs as alfalfa and clover, either or which is good hog pasture, grow to perfection here, and if our people would only turn their attention to hog raising, they would prosper as they have never prospered before.

    Enjoyed Fishing Trip
On last Thursday Mr. and Mrs. Gus Young, Aud Melton and wife and J. C. Perkins and wife, motored to White River, near Peel, for few day's fishing. They went into camp near the mouth of Big Creek. They had a very pleasant time and caught 61 fish, mostly Bass. On Saturday they invited several neighbors to come in and they all participated in a fish fry. Nineteen persons were present. The women fried 22 nice Bass and fed the hungry crowd all the fish they could eat, supplemented with other good things, such as honey, peaches, cake and apple pie. Among those present were, James Yocham and family, Otis Yocham and family, Everett Smith, J. H. Wallace and Thomps Evans. The bunch from Yellville want to express their appreciation to the people up there for their kindness shown us, and especially to James Yocham and Bryan Fee for helping us fish and row the boat, and to Mr. Morgan Smith and his wife for their many pleasant visits and for the apple pie they brought along. We certainly enjoyed ourselves and thank one and all for the favors shown us. One who was there.

Man Killed from Ambush Near Yellville, Two Injured
Four men on their way home here early today were fired on from ambush. George Long, 50, was killed instantly and the fate of two others was unknown. Joe Long, brother of the man killed, escaped and came here to report that a fullisade of 30 or more shots was first fired at them as they walked along the road near Peel, 18 miles north of here. The party was enroute to attend court here. George Long had instituted suit to restrain Homer Wallace and others from closing a road, near their home which is on the Arkansas-Missouri line, and the suit was to have been heard today. Wallace lives just across the Missouri line, near Douglasville, Mo.

Yellville, April 4.--George Long, 38, a farmer living in Cedar Creek township, Marion County, was ambushed and killed about 9 this morning, and a companion Ef Jones, 37, received a bullet in his right wrist. Long's son, Mansfield, 27, and his brother, Joe Long, 40, escaped. The shooting occurred on a mountain trail about one and a half-mile from Peel, near the Missouri State line. The men were walking to Peel to catch a ride to Yellville, where they were to appear today in a lawsuit. Joe Long, who came to Yellville after the shooting, told officers here they took a short cut over the mountain, through the woods. When they were a little more than a mile from Peel, a volley of shots rang out from the brush, and all of the party ran except George. A second volley cut him down. Between 15 and 20 shots were fired, the survivors said. No motive for the shooting could be discovered. Sheriff C. A. Williams and a posse returned here tonight, after having failed to find any trace of the firing squad, except several exploded cartridges near the scene of the shooting. A corner's jury this afternoon returned a verdict of "death at the hands of unknown persons." George Long and the other three men were to have appeared today in a lawsuit instituted by George to restrain Homer Wallace, a resident of Dugginsville, MO, a few miles north of the Long home, from closing a community road. There had been some bitterness between Long and Wallace over the question of closing the road, Joe Long said, but Wallace is not suspected of having been connected with the shooting. About 12 years ago George Long was tried for killing Charlie Hampton, a cattleman, and acquited. He has figured in several lawsuits and was in jail recently, charged with defrauding a bank at Red Hill of $2,000 by giving a mortgage on cattle he did not own. He is survived by his wife and seven children.

    ARKANSAN SHOT TO DEATH
    ARKANSAN SHOT TO DEATH
George Long killed and another shot through Wrist in Ambush fight in North Marion County, Arkansas.--A shooting affair which took place last Saturday in Marion County, Arkansas resulted in the killing of George Long and the wounding in the hand of a Jones boy. A coroner's inquest resulted in a verdict of "killed by gunshot wounds at the hands of parties unknown". Not all the story of the shooting was revealed at the inquest and the officers have further information on which they are working. The story of the shooting as revealed at the inquest was that George Long, 38, his brother , Joe, 40, Ef Jones, 37, and Manford Long, 17, son of George, and two or three others were on their way from their homes, a few miles south of Dugginsvile, to attend a court trial at Yellville, where all were to appear in a suit brought by George Long to prevent Homer Wallace, of near Dugginsville, Missouri, from closing a road near the Arkansas-Missouri line. As they proceeded through the woods they were suddenly ambushed by a party variously estimated at 2 to 6 in number, who opened fire upon them from behind the underbrush and timber. George Long, who was walking beside his brother, Joe, was killed. A bullet passed through the cap of Manford Long, but did him no injury; a Jones boy was shot through the wrist. He had started to flee when the shooting commenced, according to the story told at the inquest, but instead of fleeing from the ambush, ran into it and was shot. Joe Long continued on to Yellville, 18 miles distant and reported the shooting. Sheriff Williamson, Coroner W. M. Lay, and a posse went to the scene of the shooting to investigate. They found nine empty 32 special Winchester shells and an empty 32-20 Winchester shell where the shooting took place. Joe Long about six years ago was tried and acquitted at Yellville for the killing of Charley Hampton. Long first shot and injured Hampton, and about a year later fearing Hampton might take revenge, he shot him to death from ambush. Serious trouble had been brewing in the Long-Wallace neighborhood for the past few years; cattle have been stolen and killed, work stock injured and killed and much thievery has been going on and the Long elements are suspected of doing and instigating much of the devilment.

Manford Long, Son of George, and Joe Long, Brother of Slain Man Made Escape Through Shower of Bullets. WERE ENROUTE TO YELLVILLE.--At an early hour last Saturday morning George Long, his son, Manford, Joe Long, George's brother and Albert Jones, a son of Henry Jones, left their homes in Cedar Creek township in the northwest part of the county, North of White River, on foot, enroute to Yellville to attend court. They crossed White River and 3 miles north of Peel, and about seven o'clock when something like halfway from White River to Peel, gunshots rang out on the morning air, and George Long fell mortally wounded. The other members of the party ran in different directions, with bullets whistling after them. Joe made his way to Peel and got Hobart Milligan, principal of the school there, to bring him to Yellville, and he notified Sheriff Willingham of the trouble, who accompanied by Joe Long, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Henry Young, Coroner William Lay, and perhaps others, went to the scene of the killing. Parties on horseback, who were about a quarter of a mile behind the Long party, found George lying in the road, but still alive. They dismounted and George asked them to turn him over, which they did, and he expired within a few minutes. Coroner Lay empaneled a jury and an inquest was held, the verdict of the jury being that George Long came to this death from a gunshot, fired by an unknown party. A search was made for evidence that might lead tot he apprehension of the partied who committed the murder. About one hundred yards from the woods, in the woods, they found several cartridges that had been recently exploded, the broken small blade of a knife, and tracks of two men and a lot of blood, which they learned later were from a wound inflicted in the left arm of Albert Jones. Joe Long, his nephew, Manford Long, Albert Jones and his father, Henry Jones, came to Yellville Sunday evening. Manford said that the shooting began and his father fell, he saw and recognized the man who fired the fatal shot, about 35 or 40 yards away, partially concealed behind a fence. He said he then ran back to the river, swan it and went home. Albert Jones said he became confused and ran up the hill to the left of the road, and when within 25 or 30 feet of the men who were concealed in the brush, they fired on him, one of the bullets passing through his left wrist. He continued to run, and they fired several shots at him as he fled. He ran to the home of Everett Yocham, about 1 1/2 miles from the scene of the shooting, where he had his wound dressed, and then returned to his home. George Long was 46 years old and leaves a widow and seven children. His body was laid to rest Sunday in the Peel Cemetery in the presence of many sorrowing relatives and friends, funeral services being conducted at the grave by Rev. Ed Farmer. Writs were issued Monday for Homer Wallace, his son, Grant Wallace, and Don Copeland, charging them with first-degree murder. Monday night, Sheriff Willingham arrested Homer and Grant Wallace at their home, and they were brought to Yellville and lodged in jail Tuesday. The sheriff then went to Cedar Creek township to arrest Don Copeland, the third-party accused in the case, and up to the time of going to press he had not returned. All of the parties are well-to-do farmers and stockmen and reside in the same community, and the tragedy of Saturday morning is presumed to have been the culmination of trouble that has existed between the families for many, many months.

Tuesday evening of last week Homer Wallace, his son, Grant, and Don Copeland, of Cedar Creek township, who had been confined in jail for several days on the charge of having murdered George Long on April 4th, were admitted to bail in the sum of $15,000 each. Willie Wallace, a brother of Homer, who was here and assisted in making the bonds, took them Tuesday evening to his home at Three Brothers, on the edge of Missouri. Wednesday morning Homer was back in Flippin. It had been evident ever since his incarceration that Homer's mind was affected. He remained in Flippin all day Wednesday, and about dark Wednesday evening, he showed evidence of becoming violent. Deputy sheriff Claude Doshier was called, and it was with difficulty that he was handcuffed, brought to Yellville and lodged in jail. He remained here until Friday morning when Claude Doshier, accompanied by Homer's son-in-law, Mr. Brown of Oklahoma, and Alex James took him to the insane asylum at Little Rock. Mr. Doshier says they had but little trouble with him enroute. Wallace had always been considered a strong-minded man, and a successful farmer and stock dealer, and we understand he owns 1,400 acres of land in one body in Cedar Creek township, where he has lived for a number of years. George Long, the who was killed, lived on an adjoining farm.

George Long was shot from ambush and mortally wounded April 3rd, and Mr. Wallace was accused of the crime, arrested and lodged in jail. He was released a few days later on bond and became so badly demented a few hours after he was liberated and he was adjudged insane and ordered to the insane asylum. Having seemed to recover, he was brought home. Since the trouble occurred, Mr. Wallace's family moved to Hammond, Missouri, where Mr. Wallace owns a farm.

The Nevada State Hospital was created by an act of the 33rd Missouri General Assembly on March 19, 1885. The original building was completed and the first patient was admitted on October 17, 1887. The first patient was Mary Carr. The Nevada State Hospital was enumerated in the U.S. Federal Census as part of Washington Township, Vernon County, Missouri. It was usually listed as a separate unit, and the patients were referred to as inmates. Many hospital employees lived in staff housing in the massive hospital complex and were enumerated before the patients. Nevada State Hospital #3 was closed in 1991; and the large, picturesque main building was torn down in 1998. Several of the other buildings remain and are in use today by other entities.

Mr. Alex James was called early Thursday morning and notified of the death of Mr. Homer Wallace, which occurred at 2 o'clock that morning in the hospital for nervous diseases in Nevada, Missouri, to which place he was taken a few weeks ago. Mr. James was requested to come to Thornfield, Missouri, Friday afternoon at which time Mr. Wallace was to be buried with Masonic Honors, but owing to the serious illness of his father, Mr. J. H. James, he was unable to go. Mr. Wallace was well-known in this county, having been a prominent farmer and stockman in the Northwest part of this county for many years. Last April George Long, a neighbor of Wallace while enroute to Yellville, was shot from ambush and killed. Mr. Wallace was accused of the crime, arrested and lodged in jail at Yellville where he was confined for some time. He was finally liberated under a $15,000 bond and an agreement that he was to leave the state. The next day after he was liberated at Flippin he became insane and was taken to the hospital for nervous diseases at Little Rock. He soon recovered and was discharged, returned, and his family was moved to Missouri, where he joined them. At the August term of the Marion County Circuit Court, he was indicted for murder in the first degree, charged with the murder of Long and his trial set for February 1932 term of Circuit Court. His mental condition again collapsed and he was cared for by his family until a few weeks ago when he became violet and was sent to the asylum. His case now goes to the court from which there is no appeal and where an unerring judge presides.

    Trustee's Deed Under Sale
At the time Joseph Homer Wallace and his wife Hannah Lucy (Shaw) Wallace purchased the 160 acres described in the trustee deed from J. C. Harlan, they executed a Trust Deed with Bank of Gainesville and Trustee J. C. Harlan for $4,722.48. Default occurred after Joseph Homer died in 1931. This deed provides for the sale of the real estate at public auction to the highest bidder for cash, at the Courthouse in Gainesville, Ozark Co, Missouri on June 10, 1933. A. L. Wallace [I believe this to be the son of Joseph's nephew, Arthur Lonnie Wallace, son of David Oliver Wallace] was the high bidder of $50.00 and the sale was executed as part of this deed. Also included in the deed is proof of publication in the Ozark County Times, a weekly newspaper printed and published in Gainesville, Missouri.

In the Ozark County Circuit Court, Feb term 1904
James C. Wallace vs. Saloma E. Wallace } Divorce.
Plaintiff for cause of action, says that on the 2nd day of July 1965, at Springfield, Mo., he was married to the defendant, and continued to live with defendant as her husband and discharge all the duties as husband of defendant and at all times treated defendant with kindness and affection, until on or about the 25th day of December 1900, when the defendant became so quarrelsome and abusive that it was impossible for the plaintiff to continue to live with defendant with any degree of satisfaction, defendant was jealous of plaintiff without any cause, an accused the plaintiff of being too intimate with a number of women in the neighborhood, wrongfully and offered plaintiff other indignities that rendered his condition in life intolerable. Plaintiff further states that he has resided in this State one whole year before filing of this petition. Whereas the plaintiff prays to be divorced from the bonds of matrimony contracted as aforesaid, and that they be held for naught, and that plaintiff be restored to all the rights and privileges of a single person, and for such other relief as to the Court may seem just and right in the primises. Guy T. Harrison, Attorney for the Plaintiff. The Plaintiff being duly sworn upon his oath says that the complaint made in the foregoing petition is true and correct, and that the divorce prayed for is not for collusion through fear or restraint, or for the mere purpose of being separated, but sincerely for the cause in the petition mentioned. Signed. James C. Wallace. Sworn to and subscribed before me this 21st day of August 1903. James P. Gaulding, Clerk.
