- Leo Walter Morton passed from this life and walked into the presence of his Heavenly Father on September 10, 2008, 10 days short of his 93rd birthday. He was born September 20, 1915, to Fred and Hattie (Baughman) Morton, in Zinc, Ark. On June 30, 1944, he married Gertha Jones in Lead Hill, Ark., and to this union were born five children. They moved to Springfield, Mo., in 1950, where he worked as a meat cutter for Welch Packing Company for 17 years and as a custodian for Springfield Public Schools for 13 years until he retired. A World War II veteran, Leo served in the U.S. Army for 4 ½ years. He spent 27 months in the Aleutian Islands in the anti-aircraft coast artillery and 14 months in Luzon, Philippine Islands, in Company A 172nd Infantry. He earned the Asiatic-Pacific Service Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, American Defense Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. Leo always wore a beautiful smile and kept a positive attitude. As his health began to decline, he never complained and was more concerned with helping others than with sharing his pain. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Raymond and Lewis. He is survived by his wife, Gertha; their children and spouses, Walt and Joyce Morton, Danny and Dianne Morton, Brenda and Harold Lochner, Beverly, and Ken Scott, and Barbara and Irvin Jones; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by a host of family and friends and the caregivers who so faithfully served during his illness. Leo was a member of Strafford's First Assembly of God. Services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 13, at Greenlawn East.
