      QUITE A CONTRAST IN CLOTHING 1915 - 1965
(Photo of Mr. and Mrs. George Washington Gay)

The above photograph was submitted to the Bowdon Bulletin by Robert N. Gay, grandson, who lives in the Sandy Flat Community. His grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. George Washingon Gay, were natives of Cleburne county, Ala. He helped to constitute the Macedonia Missionary Baptist church of which the late Rev. W.M.W. Anderson was the first pastor.

Mr. Gay was a maker of coffins, a Confederate soldier and served in Co. B 56 Ga. Inf. All the furniture in his home was handmade except one rocking chair. He carried water uphill, a distance of 150 yards to his home as long as he lived. He was twice married, there were four sons, three daughters and 55 grandchildren. Mr. Gay died in 1915 and Mrs. Gay in 1918. However this picture was taken several years prior to the year in which Mr. Gay died.

There is quite a contrast between clothing of that day and the present day. Mr. Gay's pants were homemade jeans, the thread having been spun and woven on the loom. The thread was dyed from herbs. The clothing of that day lasted almost a lifetime. The dress Mrs. Gay was wearing took yards and yards of material as the skirt was full and swept the floor. The material that goes in a modern dress would have in that day, been considered only enough material for an apron. The ironing required long hours as the smoothing irons were heated before an open fire. Most of the material today is "drip n dry" and requires little or no ironing.
