In 1836, the population of Marshall County was reported to be 3,100 "free" and 800 "colored." On April 19, 1836, a meeting was held at McAlexander's tavern overlooking the holly springs, described by an early settler as thirty feet wide and deep enough to "swim a horse," to determine the location of the county seat. The place chosen was described in the Nashville Republican as "on a dry and elevated spot, surrounded by springs of the purest water, pointed out by all who have seen it as the certain abode of health" and named Holly Springs. The village was made up of only a few log cabins in the woods, but educational and religious institutions were already functioning. The first school established was one for women. In January 1836, before Marshall County was even officially formed, a group of citizens met in Holly Springs; elected as trustees Alexander McEwen, James Elder, L. D. Henderson, William Catesby Edmonson, Coleman Squires, J. Walker, John Hardin, and James W. Hill. They hired a Miss Mosely as "Tutoress" for the first session; and oversaw the raising of "a modest but comfortable structure of hewn logs, with a clapboard roof, overhung by friendly oaks," on a lot at the western edge of Holly Springs fronting the Hernando Road.
