Military | 1812-1815 | War of 1812, United States of America ![]() |
John Turner volunteered for the Kentucky Militia in March 1813 to replace John Estes. As a private, he was assigned to Lieutenant-Colonel William Dudley's 13th Regiment, 3rd Company of Captain James DeJurments & Green Clays Brigade, consisting of 135 men. "The regiment was sent to reinforce Major General William Henry Harrison at Fort Meigs in Ohio during the War of 1812. On May 5, 1813, Colonel Dudley's men accomplished their mission to spike British cannon firing on Fort Meigs from across the river, however, Col. Dudley then ordered his men to pursue a group of natives spotted nearby. This resulted in Dudley and the men being surrounded and captured. Col. Dudley and 300 of his men were killed. But John was one of the fortunate 500 who survived the debacle." John was taken prisoner by the British, then stolen by Indians under the leadership of Tecumseh, and was eventually sold to a slave merchant Detroit. The British later regained him and he was held in the Quebec, Canada town jail until he was released back to the United States on May 4, 1814. John returned to Madison County, Kentucky and married Sarah Jane West in July 1814. | ||
